Empowering Women Through Artisanal Products
From reclaimed materials to renewed lives, FREE Zambia equips women and refugee artisans with the skills, confidence, and opportunities to build sustainable futures for themselves and their families through craft and trade.
FREE Zambia is a women-led social enterprise that began with metalsmithing recycled copper and electrical wire into handcrafted jewelry. We have continued to build on that foundation, building sustainable livelihoods through creating an array of handmade home décor and accessories.
Bridging Local Craftsmanship with Global Opportunity
Kupanga Global is our bridge to the world; a wholesale platform connecting Zambian artisans to international buyers. Through this partnership, our handcrafted jewelry, baskets, rugs, and home décor reach global markets, promoting sustainable trade that uplifts communities and preserves traditional craftsmanship.

Handcrafted with Purpose
Woven by hand using traditional techniques passed down through generations but updated for today’s market.
Handcrafted with care from old copper hot water heaters and electrical wire, our jewelry celebrates creativity and individuality whether it be bold statement pieces or subtle, minimalist designs.
Whether using discarded agricultural waste from bananas or fabric offcuts from a clothing factory, our handwoven rugs are providing income streams for refugee women.
Using the same metalsmithing skills they employ for the jewelry, FREE’s women create stunning chandeliers from copper and gemstones. Designs have been adapted for other materials including surprisingly beautiful light fixtures from plastic water bottles.
Adhering to our ethos of eco-friendly materials, wine bottles are recycled into glowing candleholders with the addition of gemstones. FREE continues to expand our reach with new products and new groups.

Process & Capacity
At FREE Zambia, we combine artistry, sustainability, and empowerment to create products with purpose. We partner with women and a few men in peri-urban and rural communities, equipping them with artisanal skills that turn local copper, natural fibers, and other sustainable or recycled materials into timeless handmade pieces. By providing training, fair wages, and access to global markets, we ensure each woman not only earns an income but also gains independence, dignity, and hope. Every product embodies our belief that handmade work is not just craft; it is a pathway to transformation, lasting impact, and eco-conscious creativity.
We are eco-friendly, using all natural dyes for our baskets, bags, and brooms. All our copper sheet is recycled hot water heaters. Recycled plastic water bottles have found new life as beautiful chandeliers and wine bottles have been cut to create candleholders. Whether using natural fiber or recycled, we are diligent to care for our environment.
Sustainably Made. Boldly Empowered.
An extraordinary transformation unfolds at FREE Zambia not just with materials, but with people. Corroded copper hot water heaters are cleaned, reshaped, and reborn as stunning handcrafted jewelry. Grass once burned or trampled underfoot finds new life as a striking basket. Banana stems suitable only for compost and fabric offcuts are skillfully woven into rugs.
Just like the materials, groups of Zambian and refugee women once inexperienced and excluded from traditional trade work have transformed themselves. With no prior background in metalsmithing, they’ve taught themselves to shape copper into art, mastering tools like torches, drills, and rolling mills along the way. Experienced weavers have taught a younger generation the traditional art of basketry while conquering the addition of FREE’s signature copper accent.
In a society where women are expected only to sew or knit, these artisans defy expectations, working confidently with their hands to create unusual and meaningful pieces. Each design is a story of courage, skill, and empowerment.
